Developing an Overall Improvement Strategy
It is far more effective to develop an overall safety culture improvement strategy, rather than merely responding to specific ‘weaknesses' identified from the survey findings. The guidance from the reports and further investigations into some of the specific responses can be used to develop an overall strategy. This should be based around:
- The key enablers to move to the next safety culture level;
- ‘Quick wins' - easy to tackle issues based on a review of identified weaknesses and consideration of potential contributing factors;
- Building on the known culture, particularly key strengths.
Information from other safety management systems should be used to develop an overall safety improvement strategy. The RSSB Human Factors team can provide some assistance in helping to develop a suitable strategy in response to a toolkit survey.
